

Understanding Design

Interior design is about making spaces work better for the people who use them. While selecting finishes and furnishings (interior decorating) is part of the process, much of the work happens behind the scenes through planning, problem-solving, technical drawings, and construction coordination.
We're particularly interested in how people experience their environments (both physically and psychologically). Layout, light, materials, acoustics, and flow all influence how we feel, focus, interact, and move through a space. Our role is to bring these considerations together into a design that is functional, cohesive, and tailored to the people using it.
This is a really good question, and we have no shortage of discussions about where design is going in relation to AI and DIY platforms. With tools like Pinterest, Instagram, and AI visualization apps, it's incredibly easy to collect ideas and imagine what a space could look like. We also continue to experiment with new technology to see how it fits with our process as well, so we won't knock anything for the sake it.
With visual mediums, everyone can instantly know whether they like or dislike something, but it takes time and experience to be able to break down why the image you're seeing works (and what may not). While an image can suggest a mood, material palette, or layout idea, it doesn't understand how a space is constructed, how it's used, what the budget is, whether the design can actually be built, or what compromises might be required to make it work.
AI is particularly useful for early-stage, general style comparisons, but it doesn't know which ideas are practical, functional, or appropriate for a specific project. More importantly, we feel design is the result of context-sensitive, evidence-based solutions unique to the project itself. AI can only provide an visual amalgamation of what it has been trained on, so it will have difficultly connecting abstract dots, and be incapable of coming up with a novel solution to a design challenge.
Part of our role is evaluating those ideas through the lens of real-world constraints and opportunities. We help identify what works, what doesn't, and how to translate inspiration into a space that functions well, can be built successfully, and feels right for the people using it.
We don’t believe in having a signature style in the traditional sense. Instead, our perspective is shaped by how we approach each project and the values we bring to the process. We are guided by context and collaboration, creating spaces that feel natural, layered, and connected to their surroundings.
We believe the style direction should come from the client, not the designer. Whether you have a clear vision or aren’t sure what resonates with you yet, we can help define a direction through the consultation process.

Project Fit

We currently focus on residential renovations, particularly kitchens, bathrooms, and other interior updates. We're also interested in opportunities in small commercial spaces, brand environments, installations, and community-focused projects.
We enjoy projects where thoughtful design can make a meaningful impact, whether that's a single room renovation or a larger interior transformation. We're less concerned with square footage and more interested in projects with clear goals and collaborative clients.

Even if you only have a rough idea of what you're looking for, an initial conversation is usually enough to determine whether we're a good fit and what the next steps might be.

Every project is a little different, especially depending on which service you're after, but most full-service projects follow the same general structure:
1. Discovery + Assessment
We begin by learning about your goals, challenges, budget, timeline, and how you use the space. Depending on the project, this may also include site visits, measurements, and assessments of existing conditions.
2. Concept Development
We explore opportunities, establish a design direction, and develop preliminary layouts, ideas, and strategies for the space.
3. Design Development
The design is refined through material selections, lighting, millwork, furnishings, fixtures, and other project-specific details.
4. Documentation
When construction is involved, we prepare drawings and documentation that communicate the design intent to contractors, fabricators, and trades.
5. Procurement + Coordination
For projects that include furnishings, fixtures, or custom elements, we can assist with sourcing, specification, ordering, and coordination throughout the procurement process.
6. Construction + Implementation
During construction, we answer questions, review progress, and help ensure the design is executed as intended.
7. Final Styling, Walkthrough + Handover
As the project nears completion, we review the finished work, address any outstanding items, and ensure everything aligns with the design intent. Depending on the project, this phase may also include furniture installation, styling, photography, or the creation of marketing imagery for commercial spaces.
*Not every project requires every phase, and we can tailor our services to suit your goals, timeline, and budget.
That's entirely up to you. Some clients enjoy being involved in every decision, while others prefer a more hands-off approach. We discuss your wants and expectations during the initial consultation and adapt our process to suit your preferred level of involvement.

Our in-person consultations are working sessions that include not only design discussions about your space, but involve site assessment, measurements, and professional design input.
Technical Documentation and Full-Scope Project fees depend on the scope and complexity of the project. After our initial conversation, we'll provide a clear proposal outlining the services, deliverables, and associated costs so you know exactly what you're getting before any work begins.
Our team is based across Vancouver and Victoria in BC, and Calgary in AB.
Many aspects of the design process can be completed remotely, allowing us to support clients in a wide range of locations. For projects that require site visits, measurements, or construction documentation, we'll need access to accurate as-built information and an assessment of existing conditions.
For projects outside our local service areas, travel may be possible depending on the scope, location, and schedule. Any travel requirements and associated costs would be discussed and agreed upon before work begins.

Virtual Collaboration

Yes. We offer virtual design services for clients who want professional design guidance but don’t yet require full in-person, end-to-end project support. It’s a flexible way to get clarity on layout, direction, and design decisions.
Virtual design is best suited for early-stage projects where direction is needed before committing to full design or construction.
It works well for homeowners who are early in the process and want help defining the look, layout, and overall direction of a space before making larger decisions. It’s also helpful for those working with a contractor locally who need design input to move forward with confidence.
It also works well for small-scale commercial and experiential spaces where the focus is on branding concept, atmosphere, and user experience rather than technical documentation. This includes small retail spaces, cafés, hospitality interiors, and especially pop-ups, seasonal installations, and short-term experiential environments.
In general, it’s most effective for projects that are still flexible and concept-driven, and where clarity, direction, and spatial thinking are needed before moving into detailed design or construction.
We typically start like we would any project, with a conversation about your space, goals, and any challenges you’re facing.
From there, we assess which level of service best suits your needs, whether that’s virtual design, or a different approach entirely. If virtual design is the right fit, we’ll confirm scope, deliverables, timeline, and fees in a formal proposal and contract.
Once the contract is signed and payment is received, we begin the design work. The final deliverables are then compiled into a digital presentation that clearly outlines the design direction and recommendations as agreed in the scope. Revisions are included as outlined in the contract, so there’s room to refine and adjust before anything is implemented.
Our virtual design services are structured in two tiers and can be used for residential, retail, restaurant, hospitality, or other small commercial environments.

It’s designed as an entry point for clients who want to explore ideas, clarify direction, and get professional input before committing to a full scope of work. It allows you to “test the waters” of the design process in a lower-pressure way, while still making meaningful progress on your space.
If you decide to move into full-service design afterward, we can continue developing the project from the existing work. At that stage, we would typically complete a paid site visit, take accurate measurements, and gather any additional information needed, create a project timeline and scope, along with a contract so everything is clarified before to move into detailed design and construction documentation.
